Provenance & Details
This 1996 Excalibur Phaeton Limited Edition convertible, chassis 1XAEC4420TM960037, is reportedly part of a program planned for 100 cars. The Limited Edition 100 revived the earlier Series III body style, continuing Brooks Stevens’s combination of Mercedes-Benz SSK-inspired styling and contemporary running gear. This approach helped establish Excalibur in the American neoclassical category; the Phaeton name dates to a four-seat convertible introduced by mid-1966.
Reported maintenance in August 2021 included a battery replacement, a coolant flush and an engine-oil change. A fuel leak was reportedly repaired and the turn-signal stalk adjusted in September 2023, followed by further reported fluid changes in September 2026.
Burgundy and black paintwork is accented by gold pinstriping and polished exterior trim. A center-hinged hood with louvered panels, running boards, tubular bumpers, decorative horns and imitation exhaust headers reinforce the period-inspired styling. Polished 17-inch wire wheels and side-mounted spare wheels complete the exterior, while a removable black vinyl soft top, side panels and wind wings provide weather protection. The cabin has front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in black leather with burgundy piping. Black leather also covers the upper cockpit rails, dashboard and center console, complemented by wood trim. Amenities include air conditioning, a Pioneer CD stereo and door storage pockets. Driver equipment includes a leather-wrapped airbag steering wheel, three-point front seatbelts and Classic Instruments gauges, including a 160-mph speedometer and an 8,000-rpm tachometer. Additional center-stack instruments monitor fuel level, coolant temperature, voltage, oil temperature and oil pressure. Power comes from a Corvette-sourced 5.7-liter LT1 V8 with sequential-port fuel injection and Excalibur-branded fuel-rail covers, factory-rated at 300 horsepower for the Limited Edition 100. A four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential, and the exhaust system terminates in dual outlets. Beneath the traditional bodywork, a tubular chassis carries independent suspension with alloy A-arms, alloy rear links and adjustable coilovers at all four corners. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ventilated rotors and finned calipers provide a contemporary mechanical contrast to the exterior design.
Built the year before Excalibur automobile production ended in 1997, this Phaeton combines the marque’s established neoclassical styling with an LT1-powered, independently suspended chassis.
